Testing how to run embodied carbon calculations on our house to help Kiwis understand the future requirements in the Building Industry

Background and Introduction

EnviroSpec has been working since 2009 with the New Zealand Green Building Council at the interface between product environmental compliance, and building environmental ratings.

A sister company, The Building Excellence Group, has been working as an accredited professional on Green Star NZ projects and is currently the largest Homestar Assessor group in the country, responsible for the assessment and certification of thousands of residential dwellings.

The new Green Star NZ V1.1 and Homestar V5 rating tools include an embodied carbon credit, requiring design teams to produce a carbon profile for the building using specific rules, scopes and calculators. Similarly, MBIE is moving forward with its Building for Climate Change framework, which includes operational carbon targets as well as embodied carbon footprint requirements.

Both initiatives are significant in New Zealand and have slightly different rules and calculation methodologies.

MBIE is considering making embodied carbon calculations mandatory for buildings as early as 2024!

As such, EnviroSpec and The Building Excellence Group have been investigating these upcoming standards and looking to start building up capacity to undertake these embodied carbon calculations on behalf of developers and their design teams.

EnviroSpec's founder and Director, Alex Reiche, has elected to put forward a private bach that is currently in the Design phase, aiming to be a test-bed for the implementation of these new carbon accounting frameworks and a means of gaining practical experience and lessons learnt before these requirements become mandatory and bear direct financial implications on businesses.

The intent is to be "ahead of the game" as an early adopter, which will allow any person and product participating in this project to gain valuable knowledge about how these carbon accounting frameworks will affect them and allow for sufficient time to prepare all necessary evidence and compliance documentation to satisfy those requirements moving forward.

Project Learnings

In our Project Learnings section, we take you along as we build our own house, tracking and undertaking carbon calculations every step of the way. We share our discoveries and experiences while shedding light on the importance of embodied carbon calculations.

Our blog aims to empower and educate individuals like you, who are passionate about constructing eco-friendly homes. As we embark on this sustainable journey, we'll provide valuable insights, practical tips, and educational resources to help you navigate the process of calculating and minimizing embodied carbon in your own construction projects.

Whether you're a homeowner, architect, builder, or simply someone interested in sustainable living, our blog offers a wealth of information to fuel your curiosity and guide your projects. Together, let's create a greener future, one house at a time.

Product Support/Sponsorship Options

Gold Sponsor

Added value and benefits for Gold sponsors:

  • Appear first and clearly identified as Gold sponsor on the website and all marketing collateral.

  • Additional space and content allocated on the website's product page, including the opportunity for a key note and foreward from the company's representative, delivering a more personal message (in addition to the technical content and 3rd party based product descriptions that will be uploaded and edited by EnviroSpec).

Silver Sponsor

This may be a preferable option if full product sponsorship is not possible at the time due to budgets already being committed for the financial year (i.e. it is easier if this project shows up as a "sale" and the outcome is just slightly reduced overall profit for the month, without needing additional coordination and approvals from Marketing, Board of Directors, etc).
